‘Carol’ director to lead the international jury of the 75th Berlinale
you might have heard of the name Todd Haynes. if not, you may have seen one of his films. One groundbreaking piece of cinema that is very close to my heart – is probably ‘Carol’ (2015). Last year he brought the eerie ‘may, December’ onto the big screen. as a film loving person who lives in germany I feel obligated to visit the berlin film festival. this upcoming year the prestige festival decided that haynes should lead the international jury.
Berlinale director Tricia tuttle describes the filmmaker as a ” dazzlingly gifted writer and director with an impressive range” Tuttle underlines his work as “stylistically versatile but also unmistakably his.” The director has won the teddy award in 1991 for his debut feature poison. the teddy award being the worldwide first queer award for film.
Voice in “New queer cinema”
“New queer cinema,” was coined by B. Ruby Rich in 1992 and describes a wave of queer-themed independent films from the early 1990s that reject heteronormativity and focus on LGBTQ+ protagonists living on society’s fringes. Todd Haynes is a prominent figure in this movement, exemplified by his film Poison (1991), which features explicit gay themes and challenges traditional sexual norms. This genre has evolved over time, influencing mainstream cinema and fostering a broader representation of LGBT experiences. his films have been frequently awarded at prestige film festivals. the director marks a strong figure in queer representation on the big screen.
